At their next concert on March 24th 2012, The City of Leicester Singers are proud to be able to once again give the first performance of a significant choral work in Leicester. The Requiem by Bob Chilcott, (first performed in Oxford in March 2010), will form the first part of the programme. This is not music for mourning but a gentle and tender Requiem which is thoughtful and contemplative. It uses words from Missa Pro Defunctis and the Book of Common Prayer to give a new slant upon established texts.

Handel’s Messiah is often performed during Advent. However, the oratorio contains much music which is appropriate to Passiontide, and under their conductor Richard Archer, The City of Leicester Singers will perform the Passiontide music from Messiah as the second part of their concert programme.

Chilcott’s Requiem requires Soprano and Tenor soloists in addition to the four part Choir and COLS are pleased to have secured the services of Denise Leigh and Paul Smy in these roles.

Denise’s success as joint winner of the English National Opera/Channel 4 TV competition “Operatunity” has led to her playing the role of Gilda in Verdi’s Rigoletto and to regular concert performances. She has recently sung in Leicester as a soloist in the Verdi Requiem at the De Montfort Hall. Denise combines her concert career with being an ambassador for the Royal National Institute for the Blind.

Paul performs regularly in concerts in both the UK and abroad and has recently sung in the Mozart Requiem, Haydn’s Creation and Rossini’s Stabat Mater.

In the second part of the concert these soloists will be joined by Janet Shell, Contralto and Christopher Johns, Bass for the excerpts from Messiah.

Janet has sung for Welsh National Opera, Opera North, English National Opera and at Covent Garden and is also well known for her Oratorio and Recital work. She appears by arrangement with Chameleon Arts Management (www.chameleon-arts-orchestra.co.uk). Christopher is Director of Music at Leicester Cathedral and still finds time to perform with recent appearances in Mozart’s Requiem, Haydn’s Creation, the Brahms Requiem and the Bach Passions.

The organ accompaniment will be provided by Simon Headley, who is an Associate of the Royal College of Organists and Assistant Director of Music at Leicester Cathedral. He is in great demand as both a recitalist and accompanist.

The Concert is on 24th March 2012 at 7:30pm at the Church of St James the Greater, London Rd, Leicester.
